Customer Providing Alligator and other Exotic Hunted Skins
If you have been on a hunt or have acquired a footwear-grade hide somewhere we can use it to build you a variety of leather goods. For American alligators, we recommend that the fitting process be done while the skin is at the tannery. This allows for overlapping wait times common in the tanning and boot building process.

When wanting to only build dry leather goods such as wallets or belts a "glazed" finished is preferable. When building western cowboy boots and dry goods a "matte" finished skin is preferable. The belly side of the skin is preferable to all products we build at Parker Custom Boots.

Alligator skins of all sizes are welcome. If the alligator is below 30-35cm in width at the belly, then two will be required for a single pair of boots. Alligators 40-45cm and above will usually accommodate a single pair out of one skin. Anything bigger can usually yield multiple pairs from one skin.

We do not guarantee any skin provided by exotic hunts. We will inspect and test each skin upon arrival to ensure quality before starting the process.

CLEANING, POLISHING, & PROTECTING
Maintenance of leather footwear is essential. It affects the fit, looks, and longevity of the boots. Taking the time to invest in the right tools is important and will save you money in the long run. Taking good care of what you love means you get to enjoy it for many years.

Cleaning & Polishing
First, clean with a coarse brush and knock away any heavy debris. If cleaning suede, we recommend only using this process without any water or cleaner to avoid discoloration. If using a finished leather you can use water or a cleaner, yet do so sparingly.Once the dust and dirt are removed, you can now apply a coat of conditioner. You can do this with a brush or non-shedding cotton cloth. To apply, coat one boot evenly then let dry while you apply to the other. Once you are finished, return to the first boot and begin to brush the boot briskly with a horsehair brush to create some heat and sealing in the conditioning agent. Repeat on the second boot. Now you can apply polish in a color that matches the leather material of your boots or footwear. (Note- if your boots have elaborate inlay work or stitching in a variety of colors it is best to avoid colored polished in these areas). Apply polish in the same manner that you applied the conditioner mentioned above. For heavily oiled leathers you can use higher concentrated materials such as Saddle Soap to penetrate deeper and leave a heaver residual layer of oil on the boot. This is usually something that work boots and oil-tanned snake boots require.

Storage
Storing the boot properly is important and doesn't involve very much effort. Letting your boots "rest" between wears reduces wear from within the boot, allowing the boot to dry out properly from sweat. Cedar boot trees are a vital accessory for two reasons: ONE- they are made of cedarwood, which wicks away any excess sweat. TWO- they ensure that a proper shape is maintained, therefore preventing heavy wrinkles and cracking.Store your boots clean and polished if needed. Brush away any dirt and debris from the boot and insert a cedar boot tree, then place them into a boot bag or sock. This is done to avoid dust settling on the boots, which in some cases can cause discoloration. he process discussed above works well on any leather accessory, including belts and wallets. However, when polishing a belt, we recommend that the backside that faces the clothing be untouched. This is encouraged to avoid staining the pant or garment. Staining occurs when sweat or moisture mixes with polish or conditioner and then transfers to the garment. Protection and care for your leather footwear are dependent upon the processes and practices listed above. They will ensure you get the most out of every mile and every memory you make in your boots.
While traveling, use the storage methods listed above. All of the products mentioned above are available in our store. Horsehair brushes, cedar boot trees, polishes, and creams.
